Description
Choose the ACADEMY 1 when the work is small, the room is shared and the machine needs to be contained. The enclosure and dust shoe suit places where an open router would not be welcome, and the 12″ × 12″ cutting area covers signs, inlays, cutting boards, small parts and prototypes. If your parts are longer than 12″, the ACADEMY 2 extends the same approach to 12″ × 24″.
Who the ACADEMY 1 suits
Makerspaces, school labs, training rooms and small workshops that want a controlled, enclosed machine on a bench. It is a good first CNC for people who have not run one before, because the eCNC controller has a 7″ touchscreen and the machine is built around safe, contained operation. Schools buying a complete program can order it as the ACADEMY 1 Education Package, which adds teacher training and certification through EMPOWER[ED] ACADEMY.

What we see most often
First-time owners tend to plan for the machine and forget the vacuum. The dust shoe on the ACADEMY 1 connects to external suction, so a suitable vacuum should be on the list from the start. Sorting that out before delivery is the difference between cutting on day one and waiting on a hose fitting.
